A RUSSIAN PATINATED BRONZE GROUP by GRACHEV “Cossack Hunter with Two Greyhounds”

Cast by C.F. Woerffel after the model by Vasili Grachev (1831-1905), dated 1877

On a naturalistic oval base, realistically cast as a hunter on horseback smoking a pipe, with two greyhounds

Signed on base in Cyrillic “LEP. GRACHEV”, also with foundry mark “FABR. C.F. WOERFFEL ST. PETERSBOURG”,

with a Finance Ministry stamp dated 1877

Hight 17 in. (43,2 cm), width 17 1/4 in. (43,8 cm)


Minor wear and a few areas of light rubbing to patina consistent with age. Good overall condition.


An identical bronze group by V. Grachev was sold for $46,000 at Sotheby’s New York, 15 April 2008.
