A RUSSIAN PORCELAIN WINE COOLER from the Gothic service

Imperial Porcelain Factory, period of Nicholas I (1825-1855)

Round, slightly tapering body with gilt scroll handles on gilt foot, decorated with red, green and gilt geometric patterns on blue ground

Marked under base with blue underglaze mark

Height 8 in. (20,3 cm)

CONDITION:

Some rubbing and wear to gilding. Good overall condition.

NOTE:

A pair of identical wine coolers was sold on April 24, 2006 at Christies New York for $28,800.

The Gothic Service was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I in 1832.
It was created for the Winter Palace and comprised a dinner and tea service of 150 place settings, totaling 1,832 pieces.
